Congratulations for being chosen as February’s Student of the Month, Geoffrey!

Geoffrey is a JA-8 student whose favorite classes are English and math.  His favorite teacher is Miss Poppleton and one of his favorite acheivements is becoming president of Builder’s Club.   Along with his interest in participating in Builder’s Club, Geoffrey is interested in Tesla.

His teachers said the following:

Ms. Nash:  In addition to being an exemplary student, Geoffrey volunteers regularly for Builder’s Club and organizing the Junior Academy library.  He goes above and beyond in both his academics and community service.  Geoffrey just spent two long days volunteering at the Ballon Fest alongside Key Club.  He worked hard with one other club member to give away toys donated by Kiwanis.  He also recently volunteered at the hospital putting together Stop the Bleed kits for all of Havasu’s schools.   There are few that can match this young man’s character.

Miss Poppleton:  Geoffrey has been working extremely hard in math this year, taking detailed notes, asking questions, as well as helping others.  He is constantly asking if there’s anything he can do to help me, both before and after school.  Geoffrey comes to class with a positive attitude and strives to do well.  I am so proud of how much he has grown in the last year!

Awesome job, Geoffrey!

Make-Up School Day: Friday, December 20, 2019

Dear Parents & Students,

Due to the cancelled school day on September 26, we must have a make-up day in order to stay in compliance with the AZ Charter Board.

Our make-up day will be Friday, December 20, 2019.  We will follow the normal half-day Friday schedule.  The change was approved by the Telesis Board of Directors.

December 20 was the best option as we didn’t want to cut into winter break or spring break, nor did we feel it best to extend the school year by one day.

Please also note that there will be no After School Program on December 20, 2019.

Thank you for your understanding.  Please call 928-855-8661 ext.120 or ext.116 if you have questions.

ADE Letter Grades Announced: We Are Excellent And Highly Performing!

From Dr. Breece:

The Arizona Department of Education letter grades were recently announced. I am so proud to give the following news:

Telesis Preparatory, grades K-8, received a letter grade of A, an EXCELLENT grade.

Telesis Preparatory Academy, grades 9-12, received a letter grade of B, a HIGHLY PERFORMING grade.

I am so proud of our team!

Please also take a look at this article which explains how Arizona charter schools are measuring up:

Approximately 70 Percent of Arizona Public Charter Schools Earn an ‘A’ or ‘B’ Grade from the State Department of Education

By: Arizona Charter Schools Association

More than 2 out of 3 public charter schools in Arizona that received a letter grade has earned an “A” or “B,” according to a preliminary set of new scores for 2018-19 released by the Arizona Department of Education, at the direction of the State Board of Education. The results include the academic performance of traditional, hybrid and alternative charter schools and district schools.

“These letter grades are the latest proof that Arizona public charter schools are raising academic achievement for students from all backgrounds – particularly those from low-income and under-served communities,” said Arizona Charter Schools Association President and CEO Jake Logan. “These results are a testament not only to the hard work of our teachers, administrators and students, but also to the hundreds of thousands of Arizona families who’ve embraced and promoted parental choice in education over the last 25 years. Their support has allowed public charter schools to grow, thrive, innovate and offer more high-quality education options to families across our state.”

Charter alternative schools, included in the report for the first time since 2014, also performed well. Nearly 65 percent of charter alternative schools that received a letter grade earned an “A” or “B” grade. Alternative schools are defined as schools whose sole and clearly-stated mission is to serve specific populations of at-risk students.

In 2011, the State of Arizona instituted an “A-F” school rating system in order to give parents and families an easy-to-understand guide about the relative performance of public schools across the state. Most of an individual school’s grade is based on the relative performance of its students on the AzMERIT assessment, though other factors (absenteeism rates, graduation rates and the proportion of students who become proficient in English as a second language) also plays a factor.

These A-F school grades are the latest evidence of excelling academic performance on the part of Arizona charter schools.

AzMERIT scores released last month showed public charter students outperformed by 9 percentage points the state average among students who took the English/Language Arts portion of the test. In terms of Mathematics, charter students exceeded the state average by 6 percentage points. Charter students of every race and ethnicity, as well as low-income, Limited English Proficiency and Special Education subgroup, scored better than the statewide average of their peers on AzMERIT.

“Letter grades and standardized test scores aren’t the only measure of a quality school, but they’re powerful evidence of the learning and achievement occurring in charter-school classrooms across Arizona,” Logan added. “It’s important that approximately 70 percent of Arizona charter schools have earned an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade, and equally of note that any failing charter schools must quickly improve performance or have their doors closed.”

Final school letter grades are due to be released on Dec. 13, 2019. You can find more information here.

The Association is dedicated to supporting Arizona’s thriving public charter school sector.  As the voice of Arizona’s charter schools, the Arizona Charter Schools Association engages a diverse coalition of policymakers, school leaders, and community members for a fair and transparent policy landscape that allows quality charter schools to flourish throughout Arizona. Find out more at www.azcharters.org.
